Tips for Prevention

Today, athletes of all ages are participating in more strenuous activities such as mountain biking, in-line skating and skiing. Whether you are a serious athlete or some one who is trying to get in better shape, all sporting activities and exercise can carry a risk for injury.
Follow these common-sense guidelines for safer sports and exercise:
  • Warm Up - Warming up and repeated stretching make muscles more resistant to injury.
  • Wear protective equipment - Most sports have protective gear specifically designed to avoid injuries common to its activities. For example, helmet, wrist guards and knee pads for in-line skating; shin guards for soccer; helmet and padding for ice hockey; and a batting helmet for baseball.
  • Know how to use the equipment - For maximum safety, learn how to properly fit, position or wear protective gear. Consult a coach, athletic trainer or knowledgeable staff member at a sporting goods store for instruction. Replace athletic shoes when the tread wears out or the heel wears down.
  • Train - A regular conditioning program increases physical fitness and can prepare athletes for activities. Don't expect the sport itself to get you in shape.
  • Play by the Rules - Take the time to learn the rules of the game. You can also take a lesson from an instructor to increase your knowledge and improve technique.
