What is Orthopaedic Oncology?

A highly specialized field of orthopedics dedicated to the treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors of the musculoskeletal system. This includes bone and soft tissue sarcomas, benign bone and soft tissue tumors, and skeletal metastatic disease from cancers that spread to bone.

What is Sarcoma?

Sarcomas are rare cancers that arise from connective tissue including muscles, fat, nerves, and bone. Although there are more the 50 types of sarcoma, they generally have significant potential for local recurrence and development of metastatic disease. They require specialized care from a multidisciplinary team.

Treatment Approach:

Dr. Johnson utilizes a team approach when taking care of patients with musculoskeletal tumors. He is the Chair of the Sarcoma and Musculoskeletal Tumor Care Team at Parkview Cancer Institute. The team is comprised of orthopedic oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, musculoskeletal radiology, pathology, plastic surgery, genetics, nutrition, social work, palliative care, survival clinic, research, and nurse navigation who meet weekly at tumor conference to create individualized and consensus treatment plans for all patients, based on NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) guidelines.
